Questions You Should Ask

1) "Before we talk any further, may I see some identification please?"
All alarm service employees must hold a valid licence and be employed by a licensed business before working. "Security Employee Licenses" are issued by the "Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General". They are green in colour with a picture, name, and category(s) indicated on the front. There are five types/categories of employee licenses with its' own requirements, privileges, and restrictions. In order to obtain any of these licenses the employee must be fingerprinted by the police and have a back ground check completed.
2) "How do I know if this person knows what he/she is talking about?"
The easiest way is to look at the category and ask a few questions about their background in the security industry. There are three common categories that you may see. The most common is "Alarm Service - Sales Only", this indicates that this person is a sales person and is strictly limited to that aspect of the industry. This person could have many years of experience or have started yesterday. Another category is "Alarm Service", this indicate that this person can work in any aspect of the industry. This includes sales, installation, and must presently hold a valid "Trade Qualification Certificate" which requires many years of hands on experience. The last category is "Security Consultant", this indicates that this person has had many years within the security industry but may or may not have any practical technical skills. During the installation, you may also in-counter another category; this is "Alarm Service - Under Supervision". This person should be working under supervision and could have a varying degree of experience. Some companies that do not have your best interest at heart may send this new employee to your home or business for some on the job training. You may wish to ask about the technician's training from your sales person.
